This Privacy Policy describes how Nudge (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and protects your information when you use the Nudge mobile application (the “App”).
We built Nudge to help you pause before opening distracting apps. Privacy is core to that mission — we do not read your messages, photos, browsing history, or app content. This policy explains exactly what we do collect and why.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide Directly
- Account information: If you create an account, we collect your email address and, optionally, a display name.
- Subscription information: If you subscribe to Nudge Pro, our payment processor (Apple’s App Store) handles your payment details. We never see or store your credit card information. Our backend receives confirmation of your subscription status (active, trial, expired, cancelled) from Apple, along with a unique, non-financial transaction identifier.
1.2 Information Collected Automatically
Screen Time / Family Controls data Nudge uses Apple’s Screen Time API (FamilyControls, ManagedSettings, and DeviceActivity frameworks) to let you select which apps you’d like Nudge to intervene on. Under Apple’s framework:
- We never see which specific apps you have selected. Apple represents your app selections as anonymous, encrypted tokens that only your device can resolve into actual app names.
- We do not have access to your browsing history, message content, photos, contacts, or any other on-device data.
- We do not know how you use the apps you protect beyond the fact that you opened them and how you responded to a pause (continued or went back).
Pause activity data When you encounter a pause intervention, we may locally record:
- The time the pause occurred
- Which type of intervention was shown (countdown, intention check, breathing, or reflection)
- Whether you chose to continue into the app or skip it
- How long the pause lasted
This data is stored locally on your device using Apple’s CoreData framework. It is used to power your personal dashboard, streaks, and insights. We may receive anonymized, aggregated versions of this data (for example, “an intervention was shown and skipped”) for analytics purposes, but this is never linked to the specific app you were trying to open or any personally identifying information.
Analytics data We use Firebase Analytics (provided by Google) to understand how people use Nudge so we can improve it. This may include:
- App opens, screen views, and button taps
- Onboarding completion and drop-off points
- Subscription and trial events (started, converted, cancelled)
- Crash reports and performance data (via Firebase Crashlytics)
This analytics data is anonymized and does not include the names of apps you’ve chosen to protect, the content of any reflection prompts you’ve answered, or any other personal browsing behavior.
Device information We may collect standard device information such as device model, operating system version, app version, language settings, and a randomly generated installation identifier. This helps us debug issues and understand our user base at a general level.
1.3 Information We Do Not Collect
To be explicit about what Nudge never accesses:
- We do not read or store the content of any app you use, including messages, posts, photos, or videos.
- We do not track your location.
- We do not access your contacts, calendar, or photo library unless you explicitly grant a separate permission for a feature that requires it.
- We do not sell your data to advertisers, and we do not use your data to serve third-party ads.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information described above to:
- Operate the core pause-intervention functionality of the App
- Maintain your personal dashboard, streaks, and insights
- Process and manage your subscription, including trials, renewals, and cancellations
- Send you notifications you’ve opted into (daily summaries, streak reminders, weekly insights, trial reminders)
- Understand aggregate usage patterns so we can improve the App
- Diagnose technical issues and fix bugs
- Communicate with you about your account, respond to support requests, and send important updates about the App
3. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in the following limited circumstances:
- Service providers: We use third-party service providers to operate the App, including:
- Apple Inc. — for Screen Time/Family Controls functionality, push notification delivery, and subscription/payment processing through the App Store
- Google Firebase — for analytics and crash reporting
- Our subscription backend infrastructure provider, for storing and validating your subscription status
- Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Nudge, our users, or others.
- Business transfers: If Nudge is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any such change.
We do not share your data with third-party advertisers or data brokers.
4. Data Storage and Security
- Your pause activity logs and personal preferences are stored locally on your device.
- Account and subscription status information is stored on secure servers operated by us or our infrastructure providers.
- We use industry-standard security measures, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), to protect your information. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
5. Your Choices and Rights
Notifications: You can disable any or all notification types at any time in the App’s Settings or in your device’s system notification settings.
Screen Time permission: You can revoke Nudge’s Screen Time/Family Controls access at any time in your device’s Settings app (Settings → Screen Time → Apps with Screen Time Access). Revoking this permission will stop Nudge’s intervention features from working but will not delete your existing local data.
Data export: You can export your locally stored pause activity data at any time from within the App’s Settings.
Data deletion: You can delete all locally stored data at any time from within the App’s Settings. Deleting the App from your device will also remove all locally stored data. To request deletion of any account or subscription data stored on our servers, contact us using the information below.
Depending on your location, you may have additional rights, including the right to access, correct, or delete your personal information, the right to object to or restrict certain processing, and the right to data portability. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email address below.
6. Children’s Privacy
Nudge is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or the relevant minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.
7. International Data Transfers
If you use Nudge outside of the country where our servers are located, your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in a different country. By using the App, you consent to this transfer, in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
8. Subscription and Billing Information
Nudge offers optional auto-renewing subscriptions:
- Monthly subscription: $9.99 USD per month
- Annual subscription: $59.99 USD per year
All payments are processed by Apple through the App Store. We do not collect or store your payment card details. Subscription management, including cancellations and refund requests, is handled through your Apple ID account settings, as required by Apple’s App Store policies.
We receive subscription status updates from Apple (such as active, trialing, expired, or cancelled) to determine your access to Pro features within the App.
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the App or by other means before the changes take effect. Your continued use of the App after the effective date of any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
